This article will describe more about truvia versus sugar.

What is Truvia?

Finding alternatives to sugar, without the calories and negative health consequences, is big business. Truvia is the latest in the line of natural sweeteners and offers an interesting natural alternative to satisfy the sweetest tooth.

So just what is Truvia exactly? Truvia is an extract of the Stevia plant and was released to the US market in 2008. The Stevia plant is native to South America, although its robust nature and natural resistance to pests mean that it grows well in many parts of the world. This extract is combined with sugar alcohol to create a fine white powder, similar in appearance to normal sugar.

Over the last 3 years it has become the second best selling sweetener in the States. It is also used as a sweetening ingredient in many household brands, so the chances are, you have already tried it.

Truvia

Given that it is made from plant extract, it is classified as a natural sweetener. It is also calorie free, which is obviously a big bonus for most of us. The sweet tasting ingredient in Truvia is called rebiana. This is extracted from the Stevia leaves by soaking them in water and is actually 200 times sweeter than normal table sugar.

Unlike other artificial sweeteners, Truvia tends to have a neutral taste which makes it ideal for both cooking and in beverages.

Studies have failed to show any possible negative side effects linked to its use.

Sugar

Believe it or not, the average american consumes between two and three pounds of sugar per week. That means that they consume between 100 and 150 pounds of sugar per year! In other words, many of us literally eat our own body weight in sugar per year! It’s easy to do this because it is an additive in everything from bread to ketchup. To provide a comparison, in the late 1800′s, americans only consumed about 5 pounds of sugar per year. How crazy is that! So what are some of sugar’s health risks?

Sugar is shown to raise what is called the insulin level in the body. When this happens, growth hormones aren’t released as much as they normally are and this in term causes the immune system to become weakened. As much sugar as we consume on a yearly basis, is it any surprise to anyone that we’re getting sick all of the time?
