Human beings are home to multiple bacteria and yeast. They rest in our bodies in different areas without being harmful. Similarly, a woman’s vagina has millions of bacteria and yeast that do not harm or cause any problems. But specific changes in the genital ecosystem can result in the bacteria causing issues down there. The changes can vary from the change of weather, the reaction to an intimate wash, or forceful intercourse.

Vaginal infections are common among women, given the constant change in hormones. The chances of a woman getting a genital infection may increase with multiple sex partners. Many vaginal infections are self-healing within 2-3 days and show no symptoms. However, some can cause pain and irritation and cause a wound in the genital area. This article mentions a few common infections women have in their intimate areas.

Vaginal infections

Bartholin’s Cysts

The vagina has a Bartholin’s gland on each side of the opening. It secrets lubricants to keep the genitals from drying up. The glands may get blocked at times due to injury, sexual intercourse, or surgery. The blocking of the glands leads to a fluid buildup in the gland, causing a cyst. The Bartholin’s cyst can also form pus due to infection in severe cases. You may need to consult a gynecologist to get medicated treatment for the infected cysts. The doctor may also suggest minor surgery to remove the cysts depending on the size of the cyst and the level of infection.

Bacterial Vaginosis

It is a common infection in women after they hit adolescence. The vagina has naturally occurring bacteria that help keep a healthy ecosystem down there. AT times, there is an imbalance in the bacteria that leads to infection. The leading causes of bacterial overgrowth include repeated douching, multiple sex partners, and the use of IUDs.

Experts suggest that women with bacterial vaginosis should consult a doctor at the earliest and get proper treatment. The infection can lead to increased chances of STDs and other vaginal problems. Reportedly, it is contagious between female sexual partners.

Yeast Infection

Just like bacteria, a woman’s genitals are also home to yeast. 0The most common type of yeast is Candida. They are harmless for human beings; however, overgrowth of Candida can cause an infection in the genital area. There are various reasons for Candida to overgrow down there, such as:

  • Hormonal changes due to pregnancy
  • Menstruation
  • Unprotected sex
  • Birth control pills
  • Chronic diabetes
  • HIV and more

The main symptoms of having a yeast infection include thick white discharge, redness in the vulva, and sometimes swelling in the vagina. You can consult your doctor to treat candida infection through medication. Doctors treat the disease via oral medication and vaginal gel or lotions, depending on the infection levels.

Trichomoniasis

It is a common infection that transmits via sexual intercourse. It causes a burning sensation, irritation, and swelling in the vagina. Other symptoms include redness, itching, and a greenish discharge. Many women also experience a fishy smell and pain while urinating when they have a trich infection. Experts suggest a medical consultation over any home remedy to treat trich.

Wrapping Up!

Genital infection is common in women of reproductive age. They have to keep it clean but ensure that they do not use any chemical product for douching. Unprotected sex, forced sex, and dehydration can also cause infection. Most minor infections are self-healing. If you find swelling and pain in the genitals, we recommend visiting a doctor for medical advice.
